Agriculture & Homesteading of Carbon County
Beginning even before the Homestead Act of 1862, intrepid people braved the challenging wilderness to make what would become called Montana home. This beautiful and rough country inspired many industrious explorers to settle and begin attempting to tame the land with farming and ranching. Homesteading wasn’t for the faint of heart and included self-sufficiency through quilting, canning, and so much more. Following the homesteaders, industry began developing with agriculture becoming supplies for families throughout the country. Come on down to the museum to learn more about the Red Lodge Cannery, other local historic businesses and of course the rich history of homesteading, ranching and farming throughout Carbon County.
