“…Bill told me the story of how the Box H moves their herd of cattle from the ranch in Luther, Montana to their winter ranch in Frannie, Wyoming. The annual Box H cattle drive began in 1968 and continued every year until 1990—it was a big deal in this part of Montana.
Bill an I both thought this yearly moving of the herd might be worthy of a story for National Geographic magazine. We queried the magazine to see if there was interest. Although no promises were made, they encouraged us to take ride and submit the story.
With Bill as photographer and me as writer, we took the long trip back to Luther, Montana for a five-day ride in October of 1972. This is our story.”
