About the author:
Leona Lampi, a native of Red Lodge, Montana, is the author of several works on the history of the Red Lodge area, including Red Lodge Finns, a collection of family history is published by the Finnish-American Historical Society of the West in 1993. Her other works include articles on the Red Lodge Festival of Nations, Finnish-English linguistics, numerous translations of articles written in Finnish, and transcriptions of tapes of oral history conducted for the Montana Historical Society.
Lampi holds a Master’s degree in Spanish and Education from the University of Montana at Missoula, and studied linguistics, philosophy, ethnology, and Spanish language and culture at numerous institutions including the University of Helsinki and universities in Spain. In a long and varied career, she served in the Legation of Finland in Washington, DC, and the consulate general of Finland and the Finnish National Travel Office in New York; works for the Council of International Progress and Management in Helsinki; taught English, drama, Spanish, Finnish, literature, and history and institutions from Montana high schools to the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland to North Idaho College; Served on the boards of numerous community, professional, and civic organizations; received two Fulbright-Hays grants, a Rotary International Fellowship, and a Finnish Ministry of Education Specialist Scholarship; and was listed in the World Who’s Who of Women.
