Dr. Larry Loendorf, “DStretch and Regional Rock Art Sites.”

  • Carbon County Historical Society & Museum 224 Broadway Avenue North Red Lodge, MT, 59068 United States (map)

Regional rock art sites that are mostly painted images like Valley of the Shields, Buffalo High, Provinse and many more sites, have faded figures that are often difficult to see under any light conditions. A new technology called DStretch is used with digital photographs to enhance the painting so heretofore unseen details emerge.

Over the past decade Sacred Sites Research, Inc., a non-profit company whose primary goal is recording rock art sites, has been using DStretch at regional sites. This work has produced some remarkable results. At a site in Bear Canyon of the Pryor Mountains, a figure that is only viewed as sketchy remnants of paint is a nearly seven-foot-tall buffalo-human combination figure that is executed in red and white paint. This incredible painting is superimposed on a painting of a buffalo, four feet across, that is emerging from the rock.

This site is one of the most vivid but other discoveries are also fascinating additions to our knowledge about the sites. Loendorf will use a power point presentation to illustrate several of the more important findings.

Lawrence Loendorf, President, Sacred Sites Research, Inc, is an archaeologist who is native to Montana. His BA and MA are from the University of Montana and PhD from University of Missouri-Columbia. He has worked at sites across western North America but always returns to the Pryor Mountain-Bighorn Canyon area where he has been recording archaeological sites for sixty years. Loendorf and his wife Paula have a home in Red Lodge.
